NCC Mourns The Passing Of Norvan Fullerton

Port of Spain, Trinidad: Thursday, January 11, 2023: The National Carnival Commission of Trinidad and Tobago (NCC) is saddened at the passing of Chaconia Media Silver recipient and a foremost cultural bastion, Mr. Norvan Fullerton, CMT on Thursday, January 11, 2024.

‘Fuller’, as he is more affectionately and widely known, started in the Arts in 1968 in the role of “Captain Forster” in Ibsen’s “An Enemy of the People” directed by Gabriel Francis and Ronald Amoroso at Queen’s Hall.

After encouragement from Amoroso, Fuller performed with the Barataria Community Council, taking over for Amoroso and leading the group to victory in the Best Village Competition in 1977.

Subsequently, in 1979, Fuller branched out to form the group, the Malick Folk Performing Company, where he served as Artistic Director for more than four decades. In 1991, he formed Malick’s Junior Company, which has won the Prime Minister’s Best Village Trophy Competition an unprecedented 13 times and has toured extensively representing Trinidad and Tobago at various cultural festivals abroad.

Fuller led a career that was as ground breaking as it was grounded, working tirelessly to help advance our nation’s theatrical and cultural potential and opportunities. In 2003, he was awarded the Chaconia Medal Silver in recognition of, and appreciation for, his outstanding contribution to community service and culture in Trinidad and Tobago.

A firm believer in sharing his knowledge and expertise, Fuller served as a Member on the Board of Queen’s Hall from 2005 to 2011; a Member on the National Academy for the Performing Arts (NAPA) Management Committee from 2008 to 2010; as a Member of the Sports and Culture Fund from 2006 to 2010; and was the Chairman of the National Drama Association of Trinidad and Tobago (NDATT) from 1989 to 1991.

Over the years, he produced and directed work for the NCC, TUCO, NCBA, Pan Trinbago, the Downtown Carnival Committee, private companies and government ministries. He has also produced and directed work for TTT.

To the very end, Fuller remained heavily involved in all facets of Trinidad and Tobago’s culture and Carnival. From performer, producer, director, stage manager, adjudicator, masquerader, playwright, he has done it all – locally, regionally and internationally.

In mourning his passing, we celebrate the life of an extremely talented, yet humble individual who was always willing to teach and share with everyone with whom he interacted.

His legacy and life remain an inspiration to all members of the Malick Folk Performing Company and the wider Artistic community. In expressing our deepest condolences to his wife, family, friends and loved ones, we likewise extend our thoughts and prayers to them during this difficult time.

We pray that they continue to find the strength to carry on in the days ahead.

Rest in peace and Rise in Power, Fuller!
